Recreation & Life Skills

What's it all about?

Recreation and Life skills will provide opportunities for students to develop the ability to incorporate recreational based activities towards improving and interpretating their health and wellbeing. Students who choose this subject will participate in activities which will aim to develop lifelong knowledge through practical application.

What type of things will I do?

Through a ‘hands on’ approach students will have the opportunity to participate in various forms of activities aimed at educating life skills. ‘Swimming and Water Safety’ will be taught so that students can have the practice of correct swimming survival and how to respond to water emergencies. Students will cover the topic of ‘Bike Education’ where they will learn about active transport, road safety, bike maintenance and how riding bikes can improve your health. Students will also have opportunities to plan, provide leadership and teamwork skills through ‘Peer Teaching’. This will have students facilitate and plan an activity aimed at getting their peers active. ‘First Aid’ will also be educated so that students have the knowledge to deliver and administer First Aid.

What will I learn?

TOPIC 1: 

Swimming and water safety.

  • Students will learn the fundamental movements for correct swimming survival. This will have students understand the various swimming strokes as well as the survival strokes. The ability to respond to safety emergencies will also be learnt. This will be performed through practical scenarios and will have the students play the role of the lifeguard.

TOPIC 2: 

Bike Education.

  • students will learn about the skills of riding a bike and how to successfully build and maintain a bike structure. This will aim to increase student knowledge of active transportation and road safety. This will also increase the understanding and interpretation of the health benefits delivered through bike education.

TOPIC 3: 

Peer Teaching

  • The best way to learn is to teach others. This topic students will take the lead in a practical aspect of learning towards developing their leadership and communication skills. Students will have the opportunity to teach their peers a particular sport, minor game, bike lesson, lead a walk or any recreational activity of their choosing.

TOPIC 4: 

First Aid

  • One of the most important skills in life is the knowledge of how to deliver and administer first aid. This topic will educate the knowledge of how to respond to safety emergencies. Students will learn various first aid skills such as ‘DRSABCD’, how to appropriately provide ‘CPR’ will also be educated how to apply safety bandages.
