Pre Mathematical Methods
What's it all about?
The aim of this elective is to assist mainstream and high maths students in Year 10 to reach the appropriate curriculum level in the Number & Algebra strand. This course is specifically designed for students who have not yet reached the expected level in Number & Algebra (where at least level 9 should be achieved by the end of Year 9).
By selecting this course, eligible students will have the opportunity to improve their understanding and skills in these critical areas. Successful completion of this course will better prepare students for transition into VCE Mathematical Methods Units 1&2 or IB Mathematics.
Note: This course is not intended for Select Entry Learning Program (SELP) students, who typically have already achieved the necessary proficiency in these areas.
Who should consider this elective:
Mainstream, High or IB Link maths students aiming to strengthen their Number & Algebra skills
What type of things will I do?
This course will only tackle topics that are aligned with Mathematical Methods Units 1&2 and IB Mathematics study designs. The course will be tailored according to students’ needs.
What will I learn?
TOPIC 1
Patterns and Algebra
Expanding and factorising brackets
Index laws
TOPIC 2
Linear and Non-Linear Relationships
Equations and inequalities
Lines and linear equations
Simultaneous equations
Quadratics
What can this lead to?
This course leads to Mathematical Methods Units 1&2 or IB Mathematics. Either or both of these courses are often tertiary requirements.
