Asian Pop Culture Studies
What's it all about?
This unit explores the intersection of geography and history by comparing traditional historical sources with their representations in popular culture, focusing on the theme of 'war memory.' Students will investigate how contemporary perspectives of World War II have been shaped by Japanese and Korean films, and how Chinese war memory laws influence international media. They will also explore how war imagery in K-POP videos and Japanese television reflects and reshapes cultural identities. By examining these diverse representations, students will gain a deeper understanding of how different cultures document and interpret their histories, the geographical and historical contexts that shape these narratives, and how modern artforms contribute to the creation of a decentralized Asian identity.
