English

The English department at Werribee Secondary College is committed to fostering a stimulating, creative, and dynamic learning environment through the study of literacy, language, and literature.

English plays a pivotal role in the education and development of all young Australians, equipping them to become confident communicators, imaginative thinkers, and well-informed citizens. It is vital for nurturing confident, lifelong learners who are capable of critical thinking and analysing the world through diverse perspectives.

We help students enhance their understanding of how language facilitates effective interaction, helps build and sustain relationships, and allows for the expression and sharing of knowledge, skills, emotions, and viewpoints

The English curriculum at Werribee Secondary College specifically aims to ensure that students:

  • Engage in speaking, listening, reading, viewing, and writing with enjoyment, purpose, and confidence across various contexts.

  • Develop the ability to articulate and examine complex ideas and issues verbally,  provide well-considered reasons for their viewpoints, use language effectively to persuade and captivate audiences, and listen actively and critically to others.

  • Understand how to communicate effectively and discuss complex ideas and information clearly through polished writing tailored for different purposes and  audiences.

  • Explore  and articulate diverse perspectives on intricate themes and issues, and support complex and nuanced interpretations of various print and multimodal texts, including those addressing national and global concerns.

  • Utilise their understanding of how language changes with context, purpose, audience, and content, and demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge.

  • Enhance their ability to discuss and critique texts and language critically.

  • Acknowledge how textual interpretations and understandings can differ based on cultural, social, and personal factors, and develop well-founded arguments regarding these interpretations and meanings.

  • Foster an awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity within the community and understand how intercultural experiences shape attitudes, values, and beliefs.

  • Selectively  use a variety of creative thinking techniques to expand their knowledge  and engage with complex concepts.

  • Become  proficient in digital literacy.
